Dr Helen Winter MBBS DPhil, is a consultant medical oncologist and honorary senior research fellow at the University of Bristol. Prior to medical school she worked at Wood Green Animal Shelters and visited prisons, care home and schools with companion animals. She also worked in the early days of The College of Animal Welfare lecturing on physiology and nutrition to the first cohorts of veterinary nurses. She has a longstanding interest in the role and impact of companion animals in patients with advanced cancer and during their end of life care. She is developing an emerging research interest in the One Health approach to developing cancer research and has recently established a collaboration with Bristol Vet School.
She has been committed to increasing access for clinical trials and novel approaches to improving outcomes for patients with cancer. She would like to contribute and facilitate research that explores how animal and human welfare are interconnected and how interventions may have a positive impact of any people with chronic or life-threatening disease and people’s experience of health and wellbeing.
