A Dog in School – How do we plan for that?
Speaking at a recent conference about the need to improve young people’s sense of wellbeing, Sir Anthony Seldon was quoted as saying ‘Every school should have a dog or another pet to reduce stress in the classroom’ and that it is ‘a powerfully cost-effective way of helping children feel more secure at schools’. Sir Anthony has been a longstanding advocate of the need for schools and universities to pay much more attention to mental health and the emotional wellbeing of pupils. Continue reading

The Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness
The Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness is an organisation that was set up following the murder of British MP Jo Cox. Launched in January 2017, the commission planned to find ways to combat loneliness in the United Kingdom.
As part of this campaign, the organisation put out a call for submissions and the Society of Companion Animal Studies (SCAS) responded. Our submission can be read below:

2018 SCAS Conference: Pets and Housing – Promoting Health and Wellbeing
Saturday 17 March 2018 saw delegates come from across the UK to The College of Animal Welfare in Cambridgeshire for the Society of Companion Animal Studies (SCAS) conference on pets and housing.
For decades, SCAS and its membership have had an active interest in the issues surrounding pets in housing; working to inform government and raise awareness of the health and social benefits from owning pets, and highlighting the potentially devastating consequences of having to surrender pets due to lack of positive pets in housing legislation. More than 150 delegates from over 30 countries attended the International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organizations (IAHAIO) symposium which took place from 24 to 26 October 2018 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The symposium was hosted by the Dutch organisation AAIZOO. Continue reading
