To Roam or Stay Home? Understanding “Pet Parenting” Types in Relation to the Indoor/Outdoor Cat Debate

SCAS member Kris Hill has published a paper in Anthrozoös, ‘To Roam or Stay Home? Understanding “Pet Parenting” Types in Relation to the Indoor/Outdoor Cat Debate’ (Read here: Open access!). The findings of the study were also the subject of a SCAS Webinar, ‘Coddled Companions or Pet Prisoners? Understanding ‘pet parenting’ types in relation to the ‘indoor versus outdoor cat’ debate.’ Recordings of passed SCAS webinars are available for a small fee (contact info@scas.org.uk).

The study is based on Kris’s doctoral research, undertaken at the University of Exeter. A qualitative analysis was performed on 961 online user comments responding to media related to predation by cats or discussing the merits of keeping companion cats indoors.

Using a framework of “pet parenting styles,” the paper examines how roles and responsibilities of cat guardians are constructed differently in relation to the indoor/outdoor cat debate and how feline “pet parenting” norms might be changing in contemporary risk societies that increasingly promote practices that restrict the roaming of companion cats.
